Merchant City Medical Group specialise in using the most advanced technologies for both FUE & FUT Hair Transplants. This ensures that our experienced surgeons use a safe and painless method whilst providing the best possible, lifelong results for our patients.

Follicular Unit Extraction
At Merchant City Medical Group our expert transplant surgeons use the most advanced techniques and innovative equipment when carrying out your FUE procedure. FUE is widely known to be the best hair transplant technique currently around. Unlike other hair transplant procedures, FUE works on extracting individual hair follicles from the scalp, with groups of 1 to 4 hairs, using a surgical incision, no bigger than 1.0 mm in diameter. These follicles are then transplanted into the new area requiring density. Although less invasive, the procedure itself is very intricate which can lead to FUE taking slightly longer than the FUT method. But by taking more time with this procedure, the healing period is reduced and the levels of success are much greater. Whilst no procedure is scar free, the scarring of FUE is limited to small dots which camouflage after a short amount of hair growth.

Follicular Unit Transplant
FUT Hair Transplants are often referred to as the ‘strip method’, which involves our expert surgeons using a precise technique to remove an area of skin from the scalp. This area of skin is typically taken from the healthiest area of growth, known as the donor area, which can be at the back or sides of the scalp. This strip is then separated into groups of hair follicles to be used in the transplantation procedure. The hair follicles are then implanted into the new area requiring density.

What are the risks?

Hair transplant surgery is generally safe when performed by experienced clinicians. As with any surgical procedure, some risks exist.

Minor bleeding can occur during or shortly after the procedure and usually settles quickly.

Infection is uncommon and can usually be managed with appropriate treatment if it occurs.

FUE leaves very small dot scars that are typically well hidden. FUT results in a linear scar in the donor area, which is usually concealed by surrounding hair.

Temporary swelling of the scalp or forehead may occur and typically resolves within a few days.

Some existing hairs may shed temporarily following surgery. In most cases, this hair regrows over time.

Not all transplanted follicles may survive, and hair growth results can vary between individuals. Final results take several months to become fully apparent.

Commonly Asked Questions

Suitability depends on the extent of hair loss, donor hair quality, and overall health. This will be assessed during your consultation.

New hair growth typically begins after 3–4 months, with noticeable improvement by 6–9 months and final results around 12 months.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, and discomfort is usually minimal.

Transplanted hair is generally permanent, as it is taken from areas resistant to hair loss.

Cosmetic Procedure Screening Questionnaire

It can be used as a screening questionnaire to tell whether you might have BDD.

1) How often do you do you deliberately check your feature(s)? Not accidentally catch sight of it. Please include looking at your feature in a mirror or other reflective surfaces like a shop window or looking at it directly or feeling it with your fingers.
2) To what extent do you feel your feature(s) are currently ugly, unattractive or ‘not right’?
3) To what extent does your feature(s) currently cause you a lot of distress?
4) How often does your feature(s) currently lead you to avoid situations or activities?
5) To what extent does your feature(s) currently preoccupy you? That is, you think about it a lot and it is hard to stop thinking about it?
6) If you have a partner, to what extent does your feature(s) currently have an effect on your relationship with an existing partner? (e.g. affectionate feelings, number of arguments, enjoying activities together). If you do not have a partner, to what extent does your feature(s) currently have an effect on dating or developing a relationship?
7) To what extent does your feature(s) currently interfere with your ability to work or study, or your role as a homemaker? (Please rate this even if you are not working or studying: we are interested in your ability to work or study.)
8) To what extent does your feature(s) currently interfere with your social life? (with other people, e.g. parties, pubs, clubs, outings, visits, home entertainment)
9) To what extent, do you feel your appearance is the most important aspect of who you are?
