Tummy Tuck Procedures

At Merchant Group Medical, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) surgery is tailored to your individual anatomy, goals, and concerns. During your initial consultation, our experienced surgical team will carefully assess your needs and recommend the most appropriate surgical approach to achieve a smoother, firmer abdominal contour.

A full abdominoplasty is a comprehensive procedure designed to address concerns affecting the entire abdominal area, from the pubic region to around the navel. This procedure typically includes:

  • Removal of excess skin and fatty tissue between the pubic area and the belly button

  • Preservation of the belly button in its natural anatomical position

  • Tightening and repositioning of the upper abdominal skin to create a flatter, firmer appearance

  • Repositioning of the belly button through a newly created opening in the tightened skin

  • Repair of weakened or separated abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis), commonly seen after pregnancy or weight fluctuations

  • A discreet horizontal incision placed low on the abdomen, usually hidden beneath underwear or swimwear

This option is ideal for patients with significant skin laxity, abdominal muscle separation, or changes following pregnancy or substantial weight loss.

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive option suitable for patients whose concerns are limited to the lower abdomen, below the belly button. This procedure generally involves:

  • Removal of a smaller amount of excess skin and fat from the lower abdominal area

  • A shorter horizontal incision along the lower abdomen

  • Limited muscle tightening when required

  • No repositioning of the belly button

Recovery following a mini abdominoplasty is typically quicker than a full tummy tuck, making it an excellent option for individuals with mild to moderate skin laxity confined to the lower abdomen.

An extended abdominoplasty is recommended for patients with excess skin and tissue extending beyond the front of the abdomen to the flanks or lower back. This more advanced approach offers enhanced body contouring by:

  • Extending the incision beyond a traditional tummy tuck to address the sides of the waist

  • Removing additional excess skin and fat from the flank areas

  • Performing more extensive abdominal muscle repair when necessary

  • Creating a longer incision that may extend toward the back of the hips

This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who have undergone significant weight loss and are seeking a more comprehensive improvement in abdominal and waistline contour.

Understanding Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is more than a cosmetic procedure, addressing both appearance and physical function.
  • Muscle Repair: Repairs separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti), helping to improve core strength and stability.
  • Excess Skin Removal: Removes loose or overhanging skin that may cause irritation, rashes, or hygiene difficulties.
  • Posture & Back Support: Improved core support may help reduce lower back discomfort and improve posture.
  • Functional Benefits: May improve exercise tolerance and stress urinary incontinence in some patients, particularly after pregnancy.
  • At Merchant Group Medical, tummy tuck surgery is carefully planned to support both aesthetic outcomes and overall wellbeing.

Commonly Asked Questions

A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat and tightens weakened or separated abdominal muscles. It is particularly effective after pregnancy or weight loss. It is not a weight-loss procedure but may be combined with other treatments if needed.

Most patients return to light activities within 2 weeks. Full recovery, including exercise, usually takes 4–6 weeks, depending on healing and adherence to aftercare advice.

Results are long-lasting with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Significant weight changes or pregnancy can alter outcomes.

Scars are typically placed low on the abdomen and can be hidden by underwear or swimwear. They usually fade over time and can be treated if needed.

Yes. Liposuction is often combined with abdominoplasty to improve abdominal and waist contour. Your surgeon will advise if this is appropriate for you.

In some cases, yes—if skin elasticity is good and there is no muscle separation. However, a tummy tuck is usually recommended when excess skin or muscle repair is needed.

Some stretch marks may be removed if they are located on the skin that is excised, usually below the belly button. Stretch marks outside this area will remain.

Initial improvements are visible early, but final results typically appear after 3–6 months as swelling fully settles.

Pregnancy is safe but may affect the surgical results by stretching the skin and muscles. For best results, tummy tuck surgery is usually recommended after completing family planning.

Muscle repair can improve core strength and stability. Long-term results depend on maintaining a stable weight and healthy core activity.

Benefits

  • Core Strength Improvement: Repairing separated abdominal muscles restores core stability, which may improve posture, support, and certain types of back discomfort.
  • Relief from Physical Discomfort: Removal of excess skin helps reduce irritation, rashes, and hygiene difficulties caused by overhanging tissue.
  • Enhanced Exercise Capacity: Many patients feel more comfortable returning to physical activity once healing is complete, with improved support and movement.
  • Improved Clothing Fit: A flatter abdominal profile allows clothing to fit more comfortably and confidently without bulges or excess tissue.
  • Long-lasting Results: Surgical changes are permanent and can be maintained with a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
  • Psychological Wellbeing: Tummy tuck surgery can improve body confidence, self-esteem, and overall quality of life, particularly after pregnancy or weight loss.

What are the risks?

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a major surgical procedure. While most patients recover without significant issues, all surgery carries some degree of risk. These risks will be discussed fully during your consultation and pre-assessment.

Some areas of the wound may heal more slowly, particularly in smokers or overweight patients.

Scars are permanent and may remain red, thickened, or itchy before gradually settling over time

Temporary numbness is common and usually improves, although it can occasionally be permanent.

The shape or appearance of the belly button may change, and there will be a scar around it.

Incisions are typically very small (around 5mm). Scars may appear red or raised initially but generally improve over 12–18 months. Temporary friction marks from the cannula may occur but usually heal without issue.

Minor differences in shape or scar position can occur, as perfect symmetry is not possible.

A build-up of fluid under the skin may occur and is usually managed by draining the fluid during follow-up appointments.

Most infections are mild and can be treated with antibiotics. Rarely, a more severe infection may require further surgery.

In a small number of cases, bleeding may require a return to theatre to control it.

In some cases, additional surgery may be required to optimise the final result.

Rare complications can include a reaction to anaesthesia, chest infection, or blood clots in the leg (deep vein thrombosis). Precautions such as compression stockings, leg pumps, and blood-thinning medication are used to reduce these risks.

What to Expect and Tummy Tuck Aftercare

  • Pain medication will be provided, often including stronger painkillers like dihydrocodeine.

  • Rest is important, but gentle walking around your home helps circulation.

  • You may walk slightly bent over initially due to tightness, which gradually improves by the end of the week.

  • Small amounts of blood staining on dressings are normal.

  • You can shower but avoid soaking your dressings.

  • Keep your new belly button clean using soap, water, and a cotton bud.

  • Attend your follow-up appointment with nurses to remove outer dressings.

  • Discomfort usually reduces; many patients no longer need strong pain medication.

  • Walking upright becomes easier as tightness eases.

  • Paper tape (steri-strips) or glue tape is typically removed by the end of week 2–3.

  • Patients with desk jobs may return to work.

  • Driving may be possible if not taking strong painkillers.

  • Swelling is still present and may fluctuate throughout the day.

  • Most patients start feeling more like themselves, though some swelling persists.

  • Healed incisions can be moisturised with plain moisturiser or bio-oil.

  • Bruising should mostly resolve.

  • Physical work may be resumed if cleared by your surgeon.

  • Begin scar care using micropore tape according to recommended cycle.

  • Swelling begins to significantly subside.

  • Preparation for gentle exercise can start.

  • Gentle exercise can resume at 6 weeks.

  • Heavy abdominal exercises should be avoided for 6 months if muscles were tightened.

  • Final residual swelling resolves gradually over 6 months.

  • Scars continue to fade but may remain red for 6+ months.

  • Compression garments are not required, as evidence shows they do not improve outcomes.

  • The no-drain technique eliminates the need for uncomfortable drains during recovery.

  • Detailed scar care instructions are provided to optimise long-term results.
