Information On Post-Surgical Bras

Post-surgical bras are commonly recommended following breast procedures such as breast augmentation, uplift, or reduction to provide comfort and gentle support during recovery. After surgery, it is normal for the breasts to feel swollen or heavy, with temporary changes in skin sensation as the tissues heal. Surgical wounds and developing scar tissue are delicate in the early post-operative period, and a well-fitted bra made from soft, breathable fabric can help minimise discomfort and protect healing areas. As implants are securely positioned during surgery, post-surgical bras are intended for comfort and support only, rather than to maintain implant position.

Post-Surgical Bras

You do not need to wear a bra immediately after surgery. Before discharge, your nurse will usually assist you with putting one on if appropriate. If you do not have a bra during your hospital stay, this can be arranged after you return home. There is no urgency, as your post-operative dressings will provide initial support.

A post-surgical bra may be worn for comfort and support as long as it feels appropriate. It does not need to be worn continuously day and night, but is generally recommended for up to three months following surgery.

Your post-surgical bra should be comfortable and non-restrictive. It should be wire-free, seam-free (or with seams facing outwards), and have a front fastening to avoid pulling it over the head. Adjustable straps are advised, and the bra should not dig into the breast crease. Some patients benefit from light reinforcement beneath the cups for additional support.

Only the underbust (band size) measurement is usually required, as most post-surgical bras are designed with expandable cups that adapt to changes in breast volume during healing. Breast augmentation does not alter band size, although re-measuring can help ensure an accurate fit.

Breast augmentation aims to improve breast volume and shape rather than achieve a specific bra cup size. Cup sizes vary between manufacturers and styles, and fitting methods can differ between retailers. During consultation, your surgeon may discuss expected changes using sizing aids, but patients are encouraged to try several sizes once healing is complete to find the most comfortable and supportive fit.

Merchant City Medical Group is not affiliated with any bra manufacturers, and any guidance provided is purely for patient comfort and recovery.

Cosmetic Procedure Screening Questionnaire

It can be used as a screening questionnaire to tell whether you might have BDD.

1) How often do you do you deliberately check your feature(s)? Not accidentally catch sight of it. Please include looking at your feature in a mirror or other reflective surfaces like a shop window or looking at it directly or feeling it with your fingers.
2) To what extent do you feel your feature(s) are currently ugly, unattractive or ‘not right’?
3) To what extent does your feature(s) currently cause you a lot of distress?
4) How often does your feature(s) currently lead you to avoid situations or activities?
5) To what extent does your feature(s) currently preoccupy you? That is, you think about it a lot and it is hard to stop thinking about it?
6) If you have a partner, to what extent does your feature(s) currently have an effect on your relationship with an existing partner? (e.g. affectionate feelings, number of arguments, enjoying activities together). If you do not have a partner, to what extent does your feature(s) currently have an effect on dating or developing a relationship?
7) To what extent does your feature(s) currently interfere with your ability to work or study, or your role as a homemaker? (Please rate this even if you are not working or studying: we are interested in your ability to work or study.)
8) To what extent does your feature(s) currently interfere with your social life? (with other people, e.g. parties, pubs, clubs, outings, visits, home entertainment)
9) To what extent, do you feel your appearance is the most important aspect of who you are?
