What are the risks?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anaesthesia as a day case. While we take every precaution to minimise the risks of anaesthesia, potential complications include blood clots in the legs and lungs, as well as chest infections. The likelihood of severe complications under general anaesthesia is less than 1 in 100,000.
Specific risks associated with breast augmentation surgery include:
Changes in Sensation
Some altered sensation in the breasts, such as numbness near the scar or increased nipple sensitivity, is common. This usually resolves over several months, but permanent numbness is rare.
What areas can be treated?
A small risk of bleeding, which may require a return to the operating room to address, affecting approximately 1-2 out of every 100 patients.
Scars
All scars are permanent, typically located in the breast crease, measuring around 5cm. While scars usually heal well, they may remain red for up to six months and, in rare cases, may become thickened or itchy (keloid scarring).
Infection
In less than 2 out of 100 cases, the implant may become infected, necessitating removal and replacement of the implant after at least three months.
Capsular Contracture
This is the most common complication, occurring when the scar tissue around the implant thickens and tightens. This can cause the breast to feel firmer than expected, and in some cases, cause discomfort or distortion of the implant. Around 1 in 10 patients may experience noticeable firmness, and there is about a 1% chance of needing revision surgery each year. After 10 years, about 1 in 10 women will have had revision surgery for capsular contracture. The risk is lower with certain implants, such as Motiva implants.
Under or Over-Correction
While we aim to achieve your desired size, we cannot guarantee exact cup sizes. Placing implants too large for your breast tissue can increase the risk of complications down the line.
Asymmetry
Feeling or Seeing the Implants Under the Skin
In thinner patients, it may be possible to feel the edges of the implants. This is less likely if there is enough tissue over the implants. Over time, some patients may notice ripples or folds, particularly when leaning forward. This risk can be reduced by placing the implants under the muscle when appropriate and ensuring the implants are not too large.
Implant Rupture/Failure
Modern breast implants are designed to last for life, but around 1 in 10 implants may rupture. This does not pose any health risks, and the leak is often contained within the capsule. However, changes in size, shape, or consistency may occur. A scan can confirm if an implant has ruptured, and in such cases, implant removal and replacement will be recommended.
Breast Implant Illness (BII)
There is no conclusive evidence that silicone implants cause medical harm, but some patients report symptoms such as aches and pains that improve once the implants are removed. This area is still under investigation, and further information can be found from BAAPS.
Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL)
A rare form of breast cancer associated with breast implants, the risk is estimated to be around 1 in 60,000. Most cases are treatable by removing the implants and the surrounding capsule.
Lifelong Maintenance
After the first year, any revision surgery due to complications will need to be funded by you. The appearance of your breasts may be affected by future pregnancies, weight changes, natural aging, or issues related to the implants themselves.
Changes in Cosmetic Appearance
Your breasts will naturally change over time due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight fluctuations. These changes may affect the long-term appearance of your implants.
Commonly Asked Questions
How do I choose what implant size to go for?
Choosing the right implant size is crucial for achieving your desired look. At Merchant City Medical Group, we use a sizing kit to help you visualize different options, ensuring both you and your surgeon have a clear understanding of your goals. We also offer 3D imaging with Crisalix, allowing you to see how various implant sizes would look on your body. We’ll discuss the type of implants (round or anatomical/teardrop) and placement options (above, below the chest muscle, or dual plane) to ensure you feel confident in your decision.
Will my implants need to be replaced over time?
Breast implants do not have a set lifespan and do not need to be replaced after a specific time. However, over the years, some patients may experience issues such as implant rupture, scar tissue development, or changes in breast shape due to pregnancy or weight loss. While implants are designed to last, future surgery may be needed to maintain or adjust your results.
What if my breasts are also droopy?
If your breasts have lost volume and begun to droop, a combination of breast enlargement and a breast lift (Augmentation Mastopexy) may be recommended. The decision will depend on factors such as the position of your nipples, the size of the implant you're considering, and whether pregnancy or weight loss has affected your breast tissue. If you're unsure, our cosmetic surgery selector tool can help you assess your needs.
How much does breast augmentation cost?
At Merchant City Medical Group, breast augmentation prices start from £5800. This includes your consultation, surgery, and post-operative care. The cost may vary based on your specific needs, implant type, and any additional procedures. A detailed estimate will be provided during your consultation.
Are there alternatives to breast enlargement surgery with implants?
Yes, fat transfer to the breasts may be an option for those seeking a modest increase in breast size (around one cup size). The procedure involves removing fat from areas like the tummy or thighs through liposuction, processing it, and injecting it into the breasts. This method uses your own tissue, avoiding implants, but results are typically subtler and may vary as some fat can be reabsorbed.
Is fat transfer better than getting implants?
Both fat transfer and implants have unique benefits. Fat transfer uses your own tissue, avoiding implant-related risks and offering a natural feel. However, fat transfer typically only results in a modest increase (½ to 1 cup size) and may require multiple treatments. Breast implants offer more substantial augmentation and are the preferred option for those seeking a more significant size increase or reliable volume. Implants tend to cost less and provide more predictable results.
Would you consider breast implants instead of fat transfer?
Breast implants offer several advantages over fat transfer:
Substantial Augmentation: Implants provide a more significant size increase.
Enhanced Cleavage: Implants create more fullness in the upper breast area.
Consistent Results: Implants provide reliable volume and predictable results.
Lower Cost: Implants are generally more cost-effective than fat transfer.
For a personalized assessment, we recommend a consultation to determine the best option for your goals.
Is fat transfer to the breasts more expensive than implants?
Yes, fat transfer is typically more expensive than breast implants. The process involves two procedures (liposuction and augmentation), which increases the cost. Additionally, multiple treatments may be required to achieve optimal results, especially if there is significant reabsorption of the transferred fat.
Why do the costs of breast implants vary?
The cost of breast implants can vary based on factors such as the type of implants, the complexity of the procedure, and whether additional treatments (like a breast lift) are needed. At Merchant City Medical Group, we use high-quality silicone implants known for their safety and long-lasting results. During your consultation, we'll provide a clear, transparent estimate based on your preferences and specific needs.
Are financing options available for breast augmentation?
Yes, Merchant City Medical Group offers financing options to make breast augmentation accessible. During your consultation, we’ll discuss flexible payment plans and financing options to ensure you can achieve the results you want.
Breast Implant Aftercare
Discomfort/Pain
It is normal to experience some pain during the first few days after surgery, especially if your implants were placed under the muscle. You may also experience numbness around the nipple area and incisions. Temporary soreness, tightness, swelling, and bruising around the incision site are common. Your breasts may be sensitive to touch or stimulation for a few weeks following surgery.
Bruising/Swelling
Your breasts will likely feel tight and swollen for several days after surgery. Bruising is also not uncommon, and it can take some time to subside.
Appearance
Most of the swelling will reduce within 4 to 6 weeks. During this period, your breasts will begin to settle into their new shape. Scars may appear red and prominent initially but will soften and fade over time. It's normal for your breasts to drop by about 1-2cm over the first six months.
Your final result should be assessed at the six-month mark, once swelling has completely subsided, and the implants have fully settled into position.
