Why Consider Breast Uplift Surgery?

Breast uplift surgery (mastopexy) is ideal for women experiencing changes in breast shape and position due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or natural ageing. These changes may lead to physical discomfort, such as skin irritation, shoulder indentations, and posture issues, as well as affecting self-esteem.
  • Restores Natural Breast Position: Raises the breasts to a more youthful, comfortable position.

  • Improves Symmetry: Corrects asymmetry between breasts, a common concern for many women.

  • Reduces Physical Discomfort: Alleviates skin irritation and bra strap indentations, and improves posture.

  • Enhances Body Confidence: Many women report feeling more confident and comfortable in their own skin.

There are many types of breast uplift procedures that can be tailored to your needs. A mild droop can sometimes be improved by increasing the breast volume with a breast implant alone. More severe drooping can be treated by removing loose skin and tightening it. This is similar to breast reduction, but little breast tissue is removed. Please view our animated video guides showing the different breast lift types.

Suitable for mild drooping, with scars around the nipple only.

For moderate drooping, scars around the nipple and vertically below.

The most common procedure for significant drooping, with scars around the nipple,

A breast lift can be combined with implants for enhanced volume and shape (augmentation mastopexy). This is a more complex procedure that requires careful evaluation.

Understanding Breast Uplift Surgery

Breast uplift surgery, also known as mastopexy, addresses both the physical and emotional effects of breast sagging. This procedure not only enhances the appearance of the breasts but also provides a range of additional benefits: could you write it in this style
    Physical Benefits
  • Relieves Skin Irritation: Reduces discomfort caused by skin chafing and irritation beneath the breasts, often due to significant sagging.
  • Improves Posture: Helps alleviate neck and back strain associated with drooping breast tissue, contributing to better overall posture.
  • Comfortable Bra Fit: Eliminates the discomfort of bra straps digging into the shoulders, giving you a smoother, more comfortable fit.
  • Psychological Benefits
Studies show that undergoing breast uplift surgery can significantly improve self-esteem and body image. Many women report feeling more confident, comfortable in their own skin, and more satisfied with their appearance in various clothing styles. At Merchant City Medical Group, we understand that every patient’s concerns and expectations are unique. That’s why we take the time to create a personalized treatment plan, ensuring that both the physical and emotional benefits of the surgery are fully addressed.

What to Expect and Breast Implant Aftercare

  • You will receive pain medication and clear aftercare instructions before leaving the clinic.

  • Most patients experience moderate discomfort rather than intense pain.

  • Swelling, bruising, and tightness in your breasts are common during this period.

  • A special supportive bra must be worn 24/7 to aid in healing and support your breasts.

  • Short walks can help improve circulation, but avoid raising your arms above shoulder height.

  • You can shower, but be careful not to soak your dressings too much.

  • A follow-up appointment with our nurses at the end of the first week will allow us to remove your outer dressings.

  • Discomfort should reduce significantly, and most patients find they’re comfortable returning to desk-based work.

  • Bruising will begin to fade, though some swelling may persist.

  • You’ll be advised to remove the paper tape (steri-strips) by the end of the second week.

  • If you’re no longer taking strong pain medication, you can resume driving.

  • Most everyday activities can be resumed during this time.

  • Your breasts may still feel firm and could sit slightly higher than expected initially.

  • Continue wearing your supportive bra as directed.

  • You can begin moisturising your scars with a plain moisturiser or bio-oil.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, or activities that involve significant breast movement until week 6.

  • Over time, your breasts will gradually settle into their new position.

  • Scarring will begin to fade, though this process can take up to 12-18 months.

  • By this stage, most patients can resume all normal activities, including exercise.

  • The final shape of your breasts will become fully apparent over the next 4–6 months as all swelling resolves.

What are the risks?

Like any surgical procedure, breast uplift (mastopexy) carries certain risks. During your consultation, we’ll discuss these in detail to ensure you are fully informed before making a decision. While most patients experience an uneventful recovery, it’s important to understand potential risks.
  • General Anaesthetic Complications: These are very rare, occurring in approximately 1 in 100,000 cases.

  • Blood Clots: Blood clots in the legs or lungs can occur but are extremely rare. We take steps to reduce this risk with preventative measures.

  • Chest Infection: While uncommon, chest infections can occur following any surgery.

  • Implant-Related Risks: If you choose to combine breast uplift surgery with breast implants, additional risks related to implants may apply. Please refer to our breast augmentation page for more details.

Some patients may experience bleeding after surgery, typically within the first 24 hours. If necessary, this can be treated with a return to the operating room.

Infections are relatively uncommon but can occur. These are typically treated with antibiotics, and serious infections are rare.

Some areas, especially where incisions meet (such as the T-junctions), may take longer to heal. Smokers and individuals with certain medical conditions may be at higher risk for delayed healing.

A rare complication where some of the breast fat doesn’t survive and can resemble an infection. This can take several weeks to resolve and may cause a contour defect in the breast.

It’s common to experience changes in nipple sensitivity. Nipple sensation can become more or less sensitive, and this will usually change over time.

In some cases, the repositioning of the nipple can cause it to pull or even invert. This is uncommon, but it is something to be aware of.

Although very rare, there is a small risk of nipple loss. Smokers and individuals who have a significant reduction in breast tissue are at higher risk.

There is a possibility that breastfeeding may be affected by the surgery. However, studies show that many women who have had breast uplift surgery are still able to breastfeed successfully, similar to women who have never had surgery.

Some degree of asymmetry is natural, and while our surgeons strive for the most balanced result, perfect symmetry cannot always be guaranteed.

Scarring is an inevitable part of the surgery. While the scars are permanent, they typically fade over time. Some patients may experience red, raised scars initially, but these will generally soften and fade over the course of 6-18 months. We’ll show you before-and-after images to help set realistic expectations.

There’s a small risk that too much or too little breast tissue may be removed, leading to under or over-correction. However, most patients report satisfaction with the overall results, and significant dissatisfaction with the amount of tissue removed is rare.

The breast tissue that is removed during surgery will be sent for analysis. There is a theoretical risk that breast cancer could be detected in the tissue, but this is very rare. We may advise preoperative breast screening, depending on your medical history.

While revision is rare, a small percentage of patients (less than 1 in 20) may require minor revision surgery, typically under local anaesthetic, to address any concerns or imperfections.

Commonly Asked Questions

A breast uplift (mastopexy) is a surgical procedure designed to lift and reshape sagging breasts, improving their overall appearance. It involves removing excess skin, tightening the surrounding tissue, and repositioning the nipples to a more youthful position.

While the main goal of a breast uplift is to lift and reshape the breasts, the procedure may involve the removal of some excess breast tissue, which can make the breasts appear slightly smaller. However, many women are pleased with the more youthful and contoured shape. If you're looking for more volume along with the lift, breast implants or fat transfer can be added to the procedure.

A breast uplift will improve the shape of your breasts, particularly lifting the breasts and nipples. It can add subtle fullness to the upper part of the breasts, but it won’t provide the volume that breast implants would. If you want both a lift and more volume, combining a breast uplift with implants or fat transfer is a great option.

Many women can still breastfeed after a breast uplift, though this depends on the extent of the procedure. While some studies suggest women who have had breast surgery are just as capable of breastfeeding as those who haven't, others may find that breastfeeding is more difficult. It's important to discuss this with your surgeon beforehand if breastfeeding in the future is a concern.

You may be a suitable candidate for breast uplift surgery if you're concerned about sagging or drooping breasts, particularly if your nipples point downward or your skin has become loose. Many women feel their breasts have lost shape or volume, especially in the upper part of the breast. A consultation with our surgeons will help determine whether this procedure is right for you.

Immediately after surgery, your breasts may feel firm and appear slightly higher than expected. Over time, they will gradually settle into a more natural shape. Most women see noticeable improvement by six months, but the final shape and position of your breasts may take up to 12–18 months as swelling fully resolves.

Scarring is an inevitable part of a breast uplift procedure. The incisions are typically made around the nipple and may also follow a vertical or anchor-shaped pattern. While scars can take up to 18 months to fully mature, most patients see significant fading after the first six months. Our surgeons will discuss scar management options with you to help minimize their appearance.

To lift the nipples, a cut is made around the areola, which is often reduced in size as it may have stretched. The nipple remains attached to the underlying tissue to preserve its blood supply. The breast tissue is then repositioned to achieve a higher, more youthful position for the nipple.

Recovery times vary, but most patients will need at least one week off work to rest. You'll be seen by our nurses in the follow-up clinic after one week to remove outer dressings. Light exercise can usually be resumed after four weeks, and you should fully recover by six weeks. During this time, you’ll need to wear a supportive bra and avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities.

If you're no longer taking strong pain medication and feel comfortable, you can usually resume driving after about two weeks. However, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s advice for your specific recovery timeline.

A breast uplift is considered a major surgery but is typically performed under general anaesthetic and lasts around two and a half hours. It can be done as a day-case procedure or may require an overnight stay. As with all surgery, there are risks involved, but most patients have an uncomplicated recovery and report high satisfaction with the results.

Scars are an inevitable part of any breast uplift surgery, but most women feel the improvement in breast shape is worth the trade-off. The extent of scarring depends on the surgical technique used. Generally, the scars will be visible around the nipple and may extend vertically or in an anchor shape. You’ll be given advice on how to manage scars as they heal.
